Guide to

Border Prints

The images on most fabrics are relatively small, typically between 5mm and 5cm tall/wide.  Images are repeated across the width and length of the fabric at regular intervals.  Sometimes the images all face the same way, these fabrics are called directional prints - as there is a clear right way up.  Sometimes the images are jumbled up, with no clear right way up - these prints are the most forgiving and are called non-directional prints.

Border prints are different.  The repeating image on a border prints take up a lot more space.  On single border prints, the image fills the width of the fabric and repeats continuously down the length of the fabric - taking on the appearance of a rolling landscape.  These prints have a wide range of uses but due their scale they are particularly suited to dressmaking - for children and adults.

On double border prints the image takes up half the width of the fabric, and is repeated on the other half, as well as regularly down the length of the fabric.  Because the image takes up only half the width it is smaller, and more of the image can be retained when making cushion covers and other smaller projects.
